Invitation

It is our pleasure to invite a team from the United States to the BOI'99 (Baltic Olympiad in Informatics) to be held from April 16 to April 18 in Riga, Latvia.

BOI is a programming competition for high school students from countries around the Baltic Sea. The main goals of the BOI are:
  • to provide participating students experience of an international
    competition;
  • to assist team leaders in selecting members for the IOI team based on the
    students' results in a competition similar to IOI;
  • to encourage communication and exchange of ideas between the organisers
    of national programming competitions.

The idea of organizing such a contest was first discussed in 1992, and in 1995 the first BOI was held in Tartu, followed by BOI'96 in Riga, BOI'97 in Vilnius and BOI'98 in Tartu and Tallinn.

The main organization of the BOI is quite similar to the organization of the IOI. There are a few differences, though:

  • the size of the BOI team is up to 6 students and 2 team leaders;
  • all participating teams are expected to contribute at least one problem
    to be presented on the competition. Deadline for problem sending is March 19;
  • all participating teams are expected to contribute at least one member to
    the Jury.

The nature of problems presented on BOI should be similar to those posed on the IOI.

The schedule of the BOI'99 is the following:

Friday, April 16
Teams arrive to Riga. In the evening a meeting of Jury will be held. (The problems will be discussed earlier by e-mail and the translations of problems to native languages of participants will also be prepared in advance.)

Saturday, April 17
In the morning the first round of competition is held. In the afternoon the solutions of first round are tested. In the evening a meeting of Jury will be held.

Sunday, April 18
In the morning the second round of competition is held. In the afternoon the solutions of second round are tested. In the evening the closing and awarding ceremony will be held.
